EchoHawk has been a professor at the J. Reuben Clark Law School, Brigham Young University, since 1995. He was attorney general of Idaho from 1990-94. He previously was Bannock County prosecuting attorney in Idaho, a member of the Idaho House of Representatives and chief general counsel of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes. Echohawk is vice president of the American Indian Services Inc. National Advisory Board and on the board of trustees. He is on the board of directors for the Land and Water Fund of the Rockies, National Indian Justice Center and Brigham Young University Varsity Club. He holds a bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University and a doctorate from the University of Utah.
